Existential road movie. While driving east across the United States two car owners agree to a race to Washington DC with the other's car being the prize - though the race often seems beside the point. A souped-up '55 Chevy contains young drifters 'The Driver' (James Taylor) and 'The Mechanic' (Dennis Wilson). A gleaming GTO is driven by a middle-aged braggart (Warren Oates), credited as GTO, who presents a different front and personal background to everyone he encounters. 'The Girl' (Laurie Bird) moves listlessly between the vehicles - rootlessness being a key concern of the film.
