Ray kicked off his movie directing career with this influential example of the lovers on the run/doomed relationship crime drama. On breaking out of prison with some bank robbers a young, wide-eyed fugitive meets an innocent young woman who sees to the injuries he picked up in the escape. They form an immediate bond and dream of a future together but with the cops looking for them and the hardened escapees to contend with their fate is sealed.
