Panique Blu-ray
'Panique' Director: Julien Duvivier (1946) Criterion Collection Blu-ray | 2K restoration | Staff Pick | French w/ English subtitles
When a woman turns up dead in a Paris suburb, the neighbours of the eccentric and misanthropic Monsieur Hire suspect the worst of him, and he is framed for murder.
A tensely moody and noirish adaptation of Georges Simenon's short novel, propelled by its two deeply nuanced performances. Panique exposes the dangers of the knives-out mob mentality, delivering as well a pointed allegory for the behaviour of Duvivier's countrymen during the war. Starring Michel Simon.
Special features include:
- Interview with Pierre Simenon, son of novelist Georges Simenon
- Essays by Duvivier expert Lenny Borger and film scholar James Quandt
- The Art of Subtitling, new short documentary on the history of subtitles
