On the Silver Globe Blu-ray
'On the Silver Globe' Director: Andrzej Żuławski (1972-88) Eureka 2-Disc Blu-ray | 4K restoration | Polish w/ English subtitles
An epic mix of futurism and primitivism, On the Silver Globe is the tale of the colonisation of another planet and the messianic exploits of an astronaut there. To this day, it remains one of cinema’s most wildly imaginative works of science fiction.
Filmed during the mid-1970s, the sheer ambition of this cosmic epic is evident in the film’s baroque costumes and bold make-up designs. Żuławski travelled the breadth of the Soviet Union (the Gobi desert in Mongolia, the Causcasus Mountains) and repurposed locations in Communist era Poland (the Baltic coastline, Kraków’s Jewish district and the Wieliczka salt mines) to create startling pre-CGI alien landscapes.
When filming was 80% complete, the Polish government ordered the production to be shut down and all the negatives destroyed. Miraculously, the original film reels were preserved and ten years later the film was presented at Cannes to great acclaim.
