'I See a Dark Stranger' Director: Frank Launder (1946)

When fiery a Irish republican woman leaves her rural home in an unsuccessful attempt to join the IRA in Dublin, she is recruited as a spy for the Germans and relocates to sleepy South-West England. While there, an unforeseen romance with a British officer compounded by the unearthing of a plot to undermine the allied efforts at a critical point of WWII cause her to question her hatred of all things British.

Director Frank Launder and writer Sidney Gilliat treat this potentially inflammatory material at least partly as comedy, with strong echoes of their script for Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes. Starring Deborah Kerr and Trevor Howard.
