Epic but human anti-war, anti-imperialist work. One of the great achievements of Japanese cinema.  

Part 1: 'No Greater Love' (1959) during World War II a conscientious objector 'Kaji' takes a job supervising an iron-mine operation in Manchuria where he is horrified by the use of forced labour.

Part 2: 'Road to Eternity' (1959) our protagonist is conscripted into the Japanes army and forced to fight for the imperialist cause and witnesses the cruelties of war.

Part 3: 'A Soldier's Prayer' (1961) 'Kaji' faces the consequences of defeat at the hands of the Russians.
