Joseph Losey's Palme d'Or-winning adaptation of L.P. Hartley's classic novel. Starring Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Margaret Leighton, and Michael Redgrave.

Told through the recollections of an aging man haunted by a sweltering childhood summer at the turn of the century in Norfolk, the film follows a young boy who becomes the unwitting courier in a clandestine affair, his innocence gradually eroded by secrets too heavy for him to bear.

With a screenplay by Harold Pinter (The Servant, The French Lieutenant's Woman), score by Michel Legrand (The Umbellas of Cherbourg), and cinematography by Gerry Fisher (Mr. Klein, The Ninth Configuration).
