Adapted by Kaneto Shindō (Onibaba, Kuroneko) from his own stage play and directed by Yūzō Kawashima, mentor of Shōhei Imamura (Vengeance is Mine, Black Rain), Elegant Beast is a ferocious satire that was an influence on the Japanese New Wave.
