Black God, White Devil Blu-ray
'Black God, White Devil' Director: Glauber Rocha (1964) Mawu Films Limited Edition Blu-ray | 4K Restoration | Portuguese w/ English subtitles | Staff Pick
A young cowherd murders a wealthy ranch owner and flees to the drought-ridden hinterlands of northern Brazil with his wife. Whilst on the run, the two outlaws find themselves in the hands of a religious cult headed by a mystic self-proclaimed saint.
Celebrated for its fusion of mysticism and folklore, Black God, White Devil was hugely influential in shaping the Cinema Novo movement. Inspired by the exploits of bandit / folk hero Lampião and religious leader Antônio Conselheiro, Glauber Rocha’s unflinching polemic weaves a mystical tale of false prophets and blind faith.
In addition to writing and directing the film, Rocha wrote the folk songs scored by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Sérgio Ricardo.
