'Badlands' Director: Terrence Malick (1973) Starring: Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek
Hugely influential and one of the great directorial debuts. The plot is simple- in 1950s South Dakota a teenage girl and her twenty-something boyfriend go on a killing spree but it is handled almost impressionistically. The couple are strangely detached from the real world, they sometimes seem like children playing roles without any concept of their actions having consequences. The natural beauty of the surroundings contrasts with the human violence.
