Set against the backdrop of the Italian Unification in early 19th-century Italy, Marcello Mastroianni stars as a cowardly, aging revolutionary who becomes disillusioned after the Bourbon Restoration and tries to betray his comrades, who are organising an insurrection in Southern Italy.

Stunningly photographed with lush period detail and featuring the Taviani brothers' trademark magic realism and absurdist irony, with one of Ennio Morricone’s finest scores to boot.
